ARP Head Studs - Nissan SR20DET

The ARP head stud kit for the Nissan SR20DET (part number 102-4701) replaces the factory torque-to-yield head bolts with thermally treated studs that clamp the cylinder head more evenly and far more consistently. On a turbocharged SR20DET, where cylinder pressure rises with every boost increase, head stud installation is one of the most important steps toward keeping the head gasket sealed.

Studs versus bolts

A stud threads into the block and stays put; the nut on top does the clamping. That means the torque reading reflects clamp load rather than thread friction in the block, so each fastener ends up at the same tension. ARP's material and heat treatment hold that tension through heat cycles instead of relaxing the way reused factory bolts do.

Why the head gasket depends on it

A properly sealed head gasket keeps compression in the cylinders and keeps coolant and oil out of them. When clamp load is uneven, the gasket can lift under boost, which shows up as power loss, coolant pressurization and eventually engine damage. Installing ARP studs during a head gasket job gives a rebuilt SR a much more reliable seal.
