What a knock sensor does

The knock sensor is a piezoelectric microphone bolted to the block. It listens for the frequency of detonation and reports it to the ECU, which then retards timing to protect the engine. A failed sensor usually triggers a knock sensor code and leaves the ECU running in a conservative timing map, costing power even on good fuel.
